El Gordo | Lottery Facts

El Gordo is and has been and forever will be the most sought after lottery in the world.Here are some of the facts for your consideration

If you would like to participate in the richest lottery anywhere in the world, these dates should be etched into your memory with golden writing: December  22nd (El Gordo de Navidad “The Fat One”), January 6th (Sorteo del Niño), and 5th July “The Summer Fat One”. The crowd-puller is made with two golden drumsor “bombos”, and is more often than not accompanied by singing orphan children of the San Iisdro school in Madrid and a lot of pageantry over-the-top shiny stuff - from jugglers and acrobats to the dresses worn by the glamorously beauriful assistants assistants. The epiccan take approximately 3 hours from start to finish, but the whole country watches every single second.

Inside one of the  bowls is contained the 66,000 possible numbers of the draw, and in the other are a set of balls with the prizes.

Balls are taken picked from both bowls at the same time until all of the prizes have been won. Tickets have roughly a 1:6 chance of winning any prize with around 2,500 of the 66,000 winning at least face value of the ticket.
The sums involved are large and it is not uncommon for an whole villages, factories and extended families to gang together to buy sets of tickets and then share the winnings amongst all of the members.
